When winter strikes and we start receiving calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, the majority of them can be linked back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not addressed, your system may suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself plenty of time to look through and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last two years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system may be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises at the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies could notice increased symptoms. A couple other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
